Presentation of special survey research «Kazakhstan and the global world: challenges and opportunities»
Survey is prepared by «Economic Research Institute» JSC and dedicated to XII Astana Economic Forum. The main purpose of this document is to analyze international and world trends and extrapolate them to Kazakhstan. In modern conditions, it is necessary to understand our development directions and keep «synchronizing watches» with international economic situation.
Moreover, the Survey will assist in revealing thematic directions of XII Astana Economic Forum, and prepare participants of the event for discussions. It is important to note, that this research was prepared by experts and for expert community, and is of survey nature, and is not exhaustive.
Intellectual partners of the Research are Kazakhstan Fund of Economic Initiatives, Boston Consulting Group, PWC, European Bank for Reconstruction and Development, Asian Development Bank,and Reinventing Bretton-Woods Committee.
The Research provides comments and proposals from foreign AEF participants by their specialization: Nobel prize laureates, high-profile world economists and politicians. These certain answers to the questions, being point of interest for Kazakhstan expert community, constitute one of the strong advantages of the analytical survey.
In particular, proposals were provided by: Christine Lagarde, Administrative Manager of International Monetary Fund, Juan Manuel Santos, President of Columbia (2010-2018), Laureate of Nobel Peace Prize -2016, Jeffrey Sachs, Director of Earth Institute at Columbia University, German Gref, President and CEO, Sberbank of Russia, Armida Salsiah Alisjahbana, Deputy Executive Secretary UN and others.
The Research defines main risks of the modern world:
- Reduction of international institutions’ role;
- Sanctions and economic warfare;
- Transformed protectionism in world economy;
- Risks of new “economic bubbles”;
- Increase of government debts;
- Change of growth poles;
- Technological race;
- Risks of global climate change;
- Global inequality.
In addition, the main opportunity windows for Kazakhstan are outlined:

In general, it must be noted that preparation of such full-scale research is a novelty and peculiarity of this year’s Forum. We hope that XII Astana Economic Forum will be memorized by its content, large number of certain recommendations, mechanisms and tools, which are, first of all, adapted and applicable to Kazakhstan’s reality.
